COLLEGE FOOTBALL — November 26
VIRGINIA TECH at VIRGINIA
(Online Sports Betting Odds: Virginia Tech -5, Total 49.5) — Virginia has been a team of surprises for impact coach Mike London, pulling off upsets over Georgia Tech, Miami and Florida State. And here’s the biggest surprise of all, for those who perhaps aren’t paying enough attention - if the Cavs win here, they are going to the ACC title game against Clemson. But without anything at all wrapped up, and BCS title hopes still very much alive, Virginia Tech shouldn’t have anything but absolute focus, which some of those Virginia victims may not have had.
The Cavs are still getting along with a quarterback (Michael Rocco) who is rather pedestrian, and real estate will be hard to come by against the Hokies’ secondary, which has allowed only 48.3% completions (second nationally to Alabama). Even in situations where Logan Thomas (16 TD’s, 7 INT’s) regresses a bit, David Wilson (131 yards per game) is perfectly capable of picking up the slack.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL — November 19
MARYLAND at WAKE FOREST
(Online Sports Betting Odds: Wake Forest -10, Total 56) — We realize it may be tough to lay this limber with Wake Forest, but what in the world has happened to Maryland? The Terps, who encouraged so much optimism and got everyone’s attention with a win and a fashion statement against Miami in the opener, have no wins against Division I opposition since, and six of their defeats have come by double digits. Since being re-inserted into the lineup, Danny O’Brien has had some erratic outings, hitting on just 48% of his passes. This is a big revenge game for the Demon Deacons, who had minus-3 net rushing yards in last year’s 62-14 defeat.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL — November 12
LOUISIANA TECH at OLE MISS
(Online Sports Betting Odds: Louisiana Tech -2, Total 51) — Did you ever think that Louisiana Tech might actually be laying points on the road to an SEC team? ANY SEC team? Well, that is indeed the case in Oxford, which gives you an idea of how far the Rebels have fallen in Houston Nutt’s lame duck season. With a 2-7 disaster on its hands, Ole Miss will simply look toward the “Egg Bowl” as a chance to salvage some pride. And #1 LSU is on deck. So this is a potential crater for them to fall into.
Last week the secondary allowed Kentucky’s Maxwell Smith, making his first career start, to look like a veteran (283 yards, 2 TD’s), and that is something very few, if any, teams in the conference are capable of doing. Honestly, we are still waiting for Ole Miss QB Randall Mackey to show sustained progress. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs are riding the crest of four straight wins and have near-misses against Southern Miss, Mississippi State and undefeated Houston (combined margin of three points in regulation), and Colby Cameron (6 Td’s, no INT’s last two weeks) is back in the saddle.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL — November 5
NOTRE DAME at WAKE FOREST
(Online Sports Betting Odds: Notre Dame -14, Total 55.5) — What one has to appreciate, I think, is that Wake Forest is not as mistake-prone as they seemed to indicate last week, as they coughed it up five times (one fumble, four interceptions) in the 49-24 loss to North Carolina. But the traveling Irish have often made big errors that have turned the tide (20 TO’s). Tanner Price is a guy who has shown some progress, and while Notre Dame has crushed recent option-based opponents like Navy and Air Force, this is a better coached, more varied offensive squad, even without the services of Josh Harris, who will sit this one out, in all likelihood, with a hamstring injury.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL — October 29
SAN JOSE STATE at LOUISIANA TECH
(Online Sports Betting Odds: Louisiana Tech -7.5, Total 50) — Sam Jose State has to travel quite a way to get to Ruston for its revenge for last year’s 45-38 defeat, where the Bulldogs rolled for 374 yards rushing. Some may have thought this was going to be the same pushover team as last year’s 1-12 version when they were ripped 57-3 by Stanford in the season opener. But since then it hasn’t played out like that. Matt Faulkner has progressed as a quarterback, they have found a running game in Brandon Rutley, who’s averaging almost 100 yards a game, and they have been very competitive in defeats to UCLA, Nevada and BYU, while picking off a notable win against Hawaii. They’re well-rested, and Faulkner is coming off his most prolific outing yet (366 yards). This is veteran team, which had 18 starters from last year returning, so they should be able to handle the trip. Meanwhile, L-Tech is off a big road win at Utah State, but more is going to fall into the hands of Colby Cameron, who was a relative bust in Sonny Dykes’ offense before losing the job to freshman Nick Isham, who is unlikely to start here with a shoulder injury.
