Online Sports Betting: Tennessee Volunteers at Alabama Crimson Tide (10/22)

October 22nd, 2011

COLLEGE FOOTBALL — October 22

TENNESSEE at ALABAMA
(Online Sports Betting Odds: Alabama -29.5, Total 46.5) — Alabama has a great case for the #1 ranking, and there would appear to be little doubt as to whether the Crimson Tide has the #1 defense in the country. Nick Saban’s team has surrendered just 38 rushing yards and 184 overall yards per contest. And although they have played teams like Arkansas, Florida and Penn State, the Tide has not allowed more than 14 points (with an average of 7 ppg). It is doubtful that Matt Simms, who was six for 20 last week against LSU, will have any answers.

Trent Richardson is fortifying his Heisman campaign (912 yards, 15 TD’s), and like Greg McElroy in his formative stages, AJ McCarron is making progress, with 67% completions, and he hasn’t thrown an interception since the season opener. This is now partly a “poll game,” and you know that ‘Bama, which has covered six of its last games, will be looking to “one-up” LSU’s 38-7 win over the Volunteers last week.

JAY’S ONLINE SPORTS BETTING PLAY: ALABAMA -29.5 **

Online Sports Betting: Oklahoma Sooners at Kansas Jayhawks (10/15)

October 14th, 2011

COLLEGE FOOTBALL — October 15

OKLAHOMA at KANSAS
(Online Sports Betting Odds: Oklahoma -35.5, Total 73) — Kansas has already given up 66 points to Oregon and 70 to Oklahoma State, and the Sooners are in that stratosphere offensively. The Jayhawks have surrendered 6.2 yards a carry (highest in the country), 73% completions and 9.5 yards a pass attempt, with ONE interception. The teams like LSU and Alabama are now getting the attention for #1 in the country, and the Sooners have slid in the AP poll while maintaining the top spot in the coaches’ tally. But you could see where the anger led them - 62 points against lesser light Ball State and then 55 against hated rival Texas - and then you realize that in the past Bob Stoops has been absolutely unencumbered by etiquette when it came to running it up, and….well, you know where that leads. Landry Jones has not been flawless (5 INT’s), but only a handful of quarterbacks have thrown for more yards.

JAY’S ONLINE SPORTS BETTING PLAY: OKLAHOMA -35.5 **

Online Sports Betting: UNLV Rebels at Nevada Wolf Pack (10/8)

October 8th, 2011

COLLEGE FOOTBALL — October 8

UNLV at NEVADA
(Online Sports Betting Odds: Nevada -20.5, Total 55) — During the second era of Chris Ault, the Wolf Pack has enjoyed beating its in-state rival. They have done it, in fact, six straight times, covering on five of those occasions. And though the Pistol didn’t generate very much in the game last week against revenge-minded Boise State, the defense was on its toes, limiting Heisman candidate Kellen Moore to 142 yards through the air and intercepting him twice. They don’t need additional incentive to get up for this particular matchup, which is bitter.

UNLV has had extra time to prepare, and that may be of some benefit, but you got a pretty good idea where the program is right now from its 41-16 defeat at the hands of Southern Utah. Bobby Hauck’s “get tough” approach is not yielding results, and now questions have to be asked about how long he’ll reign just off the Strip. Note a couple of things here - that Nevada has covered 21 of its last 28 as a home favorite, and that this is the FIRST home game of the year after playing the likes of Oregon, Texas Tech and Boise State on the road.

JAY’S ONLINE SPORTS BETTING PLAY: NEVADA -20.5 **

Online Sports Betting: SMU Mustangs at TCU Horned Frogs (10/1)

October 1st, 2011

COLLEGE FOOTBALL — October 1

SMU at TCU
(Online Sports Betting Odds: TCU -13, Total 56) — You really have to like what Casey Pachall has done, especially when you realize that he had to take over in the wake of Andy Dalton, the four-year starter. He’s got a strong arm, poise, guts (cramping up many times in the season opener) and 10 TD’s with just two interceptions. But the TCU defense does not resemble what we have seen in recent seasons, when Gary Patterson seemed very capable of dealing with player turnover and still keeping his team near the top of the NCAA’s statistical rankings. At this moment, the Horned Frogs are just 69th against the run, 109th against the lass, and 85th overall. This doesn’t work.

SMU made the transition from Kyle Padron to JJ McDermott and has done so rather seamlessly. They offer a challenge to the TCU defense through the air that is a little scary, considering what Baylor’s Robert Griffin was able to accomplish in the opener (359 yards, 5 TD’s, 50 points). The balance is there; Zach Line is second in the nation in rushing touchdowns (11), and he has 139 yards against TCU last season. This battle of the Metroplex could maintain its suspense late into the game.

JAY’S ONLINE SPORTS BETTING PLAY: SMU +13 **

Online Sports Betting: Houston Texans at New Orleans Saints (9/25)

September 24th, 2011

PRO FOOTBALL — September 25

HOUSTON at NEW ORLEANS
(Online Sports Betting Odds: Saints -4, Total 53) — Not sure the Houston offense is going to be anything shocking for the Saints defense, which has already faced the Packers and Mike Martz’s sophisticated Chicago offense. Oddsmakers are being very careful with this number, because the Houston defense is showing some dramatic improvement in the early going under new defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, who has Mario Williams standing up and rushing the passer from an outside linebacker position. The Texans also come to the table with great run blocking, which means that even as Arian Foster may or may not play, they do not worrry, because Ben Tate, the former Auburn back who had to sit out last season with an injury, has rambled for 219 yards in the first two games. New Orleans sacked Jay Cutler six times last week, but Houston’s schemes are designed to protect better, and unlike Cutler, Matt Schaub has a top-of-the-line receiver who can burn a team that “sells out” (we’re talking about Andre Johnson - 188 yards receiving).

JAY’S PLAY: HOUSTON +4 **
